Cu3[Fe(CN)6]2 + NaOH
« on: May 15, 2013, 03:58:59 PM »
Hello,

The reaction was supposed to be

Cu3[Fe(CN)6]2 + 6NaOH  :rarrow: 3Cu(OH)2 + 2Na3[Fe(CN)6]

and the result was (I'm sorry for the bad photo, phone camera did not focus three times in a row, so i just gave up)

It certainly does not look like Cu(OH)2 has formed. Test tube should have been clean. Professor did not know what has formed there, too.

If anyone could tell what happened there, I would be very grateful.

Cu3[Fe(CN)6]2 + 6NaOH  :rarrow: 3Cu(OH)2 + 2Na3[Fe(CN)6]

Can you elaborate on the experiment? Inorganic reactions in water by Ronald Rich suggests Cu3[Fe(CN)6] is insoluble. Have you tried to dissolve it in the NaOH solution, expecting metathesis reaction?

Yes, exactly that.

After pouring NaOH on Cu3[Fe(CN)6]2, it all dissolved and the mixture turned greenish-blue color, but after few seconds this precipitate formed. Exactly the same experiment was done with Cu2[Fe(CN)6], everything was like it was expected (Cu(OH)2 precipitated).

Did it immediately degrade to CuO?
