Calculate the Charge Required
« on: May 23, 2013, 01:13:15 AM »
How much charge is required for the following reduction?
a) 1 Mole of MnO4- to Mn2+

In the Solution, the follwing equation is mentioned
MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e-  :rarrow: Mn2+ + 4H2O

Here, 5 Moles of e- are reqiured and the amount of charge required is 5F

I have the following questions.
1) How is the equation obtained ?
2) Is it possible to determine the no. of Moles of electron invovled in  the reaction without knowing the equation.

Thank you for your Help.

Start by googling "how to balance redox equations" or something like that. There are many tutorials, including youtube videos, on this subject.
My research: Google Scholar and Researchgate

Other possibility compare the Oxidation number of the Manganese in Permanganate and in Manganese-II.  MnO4- to Mn2+
