Help: Briggs Rauscher Experiment
« on: June 09, 2013, 08:45:13 PM »
Hi all,

I recently stumbled upon this experiment based on the Briggs Rauscher Lab
http://www.scienceinschool.org/repository/docs/issue13_antioxidants.pdf

Can someone please explain to me the chemistry behind the reaction of antioxidant after adding a food sample during the blue phase of the reaction? How do antioxidants prolong the blue pahse?

Thank you

Here is a reference to the chemistry involved in the oscillating reaction:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briggs%E2%80%93Rauscher_reaction#Chemical_mechanism  Your reference also mentions how certain foods can function as free radical scavengers.  Can you pull all of that together into an answer to your question?  That is the purpose of this forum -- to learn new things with hints, not to get a complete answer typed out for you.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
