Plant Grow Room
« on: June 06, 2013, 12:58:40 AM »
A medicinal plant is grown indoors and the outer perimeter plant's leaves are often touching walls. The plant is grown for many months and the temperature of the room can be up to 100F. Is it possible that a significant amount of paint can leach from the walls into the plant?

Depends on the paint.

If it depends on the paint I am assuming that a significant amount can leach in certain cases. I believe this is enough to raise concern for the patients which depend on this medicinal plant which is not yet regulated by the FDA. It would also seem that over its lifespan the plants will accumulate VOCs present in the room. I will soon search the internet to see if I can find any information regarding the accumulation of VOCs or pollutants in general by plants in order to asses the magnitude of this problem. I would appreciate anybody's thoughts on this potential problem.

It is also very dependent on the plant, what parts are used, the particular active ingredients, how it is processed before administration etc.

For example, Hops (Humulus lupulus) contain a medicinal substance which is a very strong chelator of divalent and trivalent metal ions.

Could you be a bit more specific about this medicinal plant?

Can you try to guess, from the context, and maybe consider that Amitaabh: shouldn't be more specific?

If I have to speculate, from the context, as to what this is then I suspect that it is not an appropriate topic for this forum so I can offer no more adivce on the matter.

Why isn't the plant grown outdoors, instead? [innocent look]
