another naming compound question
« on: July 10, 2013, 05:53:02 AM »
Draw and name:

(CH3)3 C CH2 CH (CH3)2

I think its name ends in trimethyl pentane but as I cant draw it, I am having difficulty naming it. Any help please?

Yes, it is a trimethylpentane. Start by identifying the longest carbon chain, number it, assign locants.

2,4-trimethylpentane. but what do I name the 2 CHs on 3? shouldnt they be CH3s?

          CH3  CH
CH3 -- C------C----CH--CH3
          CH3   CH    CH3
1        2        3      4      5

Thanks

You haven't quite drawn that properly, you only have 8 carbons in your original post. Carbon 3 should be CH2 what you have drawn is not possible and it contains 10 carbons.

Also if you have "trimethyl" you need to identify where all three methyl groups are, two of them are on the same carbon.

This sounds pedantic but that's nomenclature for you!

@marshmallow

you might look at this thread to assist in drawing
http://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?topic=64128.0
you can practice there and see some of the links that teach

WIKI has 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane
Molecular formula    C8H18

ok, thanks. over-enthusiastic use of carbons i think.

Ive drawn and looked at it again and Im pretty sure its 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. is this correct?

thanks

edit: forgot the other 2.

Please do not change a previous post - it causes confusion (I do not think you did - it is just a warning)
The post you just made did not have a diagram
