effect of decreasing volume on reaction
« on: February 21, 2006, 07:55:24 PM »
I am having trouble understanding why the formation of reactants would be favored in the following reaction when the volume of the system is decreased.

2NaHCO3 (s) --> Na2CO3 (s) + CO2 (g) + H20 (g)

anyone know??, please *delete me*!

Presumably when you decrease the volume you also increase the pressure of the system. Increasing the pressure of a reaction involving a gas tens to drive the reaction in the opposite direction, ie the gas is less favoured at high pressure.
