Making KClO3 or KClO4
« on: August 23, 2013, 08:21:18 AM »
I have KCl solution. I'm wondering if i can "transform" it in KClO3. Maybe KClO4? What i need to do?
Please help.

It would appear it is possible by the electrolysis of a KCl solution:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_chlorate#Production  Probably not a very efficient method 'tho.  If you have a justifiable need, then you have the technical skill to use it safely, and can buy it pretty easily.  If not, then you can't, and you won't, because you shouldn't.

Thank you Arkcon!
I will try it.This is for chemistry only (just for fun) i can buy it, however i don't need it.
I like to do chem.That's all.

I don't have Ca(OH)2 so i can't make Limewater.Is there any other way to make KClO3 with Electrolysis?

I would check the WIKI

Electrolysis!  Pick up some graphite rods, hook up 5 V from a computer power supply and go to town.  After recrystallize to purify from electrode sludge.

Here is more info http://www.vk2zay.net/article/63

I made almost a pound out of one electrolytic cell once by this method.

Sounds like someone is trying to make their own explosives....

potassium perchlorate can be made by heat KClO3:4 KClO3 --> 3 KClO4 + KCl

if you don't have KClO3, you can try this method:NaClO4 + KCl --> KClO4 + NaCl

potassium perchlorate can be made by heat KClO3:4 KClO3 --> 3 KClO4 + KCl

And if any organics are present while you melt chlorate, the entire thing will explode..

Generally it's safe. Nobody would like to mix something deliberately when doing this experiment. In my experiment class, I use KClO3 to produce O2 with the catalyst MnO2.

When we post suggestions if there is a hazard potential we post that as well
you failed to do that so 408 helped you

So...I will make a solution of KCl and water, put it in a jar and make electrolysis with carbon anode and cathode.While waiting KClo3 will appear. Heating it will produce KClO4.Is this true?
