synthesis of [Co(en)2Cl2]Cl
« on: February 22, 2006, 10:57:57 AM »
Hi...

Doing a lab report and before i can calculate my yields of the cis and trans [Co(en)2Cl2]Cl i need to get the correct reaction formula!!
I've tried guessing it but i don't even know where to start and i dont want to get it horribly wrong because my mistake'll follow through!.

The steps i took Trans were:
  • dissolve CoCl2.6H20 in H2O
  • add 10% soln of en
  • draw air thru for 10-12 hrs
  • add conc HCL
For Cis:
  • dissolve some trans isomer in min. 50% aq ethanol
  • neutralise w/ NaOH
  • evaporate to dryness, repeat
Any help gratefully received!

4Co(H2O)6++  + O2 + 2H2O -> 4Co(H2O)6+++  +  4OH-

Co(H2O)6+++  + + 2 Cl- -> Co(H2O)4Cl2+ + 2 H2O + 2 en -> [Co(en)2Cl2]+ + 6H2O

What do you think about it?

Or, to show reaction all in one go:

4CoCl2 + 8en+ O2 + 4HCl -> [4CoCl2en2]Cl + 4H2O

Thus one mole of CoCl2.6H2O (fw 238) gives one mole [CoCl2en2]Cl (fw 285.5)

or, very closely, 1.200 grams of [CoCl2en2]Cl should be obtained per gram of CoCl2.6H2O used.
