acetone with KMnO4
« on: February 22, 2006, 08:23:23 PM »
Does anyone know the balanced chemical equation for the oxidation of acetone (to produce CH3COOH + HCOOH) using potassium permanganate KMnO4(aq) in neutral conditions?

I know there are 2 half ionic equations:
one is reduction of KMnO4 to manganese dioxide, MnO4- + 4H+ + 3e- ----> MnO2 + 2H2O

the other is oxidation of acetone? then we add 2 eqns so im not sure what it is?  ???

Thanks!
