Molecular, total ionic, net ionic equation for a reaction?
« on: September 01, 2013, 01:48:12 PM »
Show the molecular, total ionic, and net ionic equation for the reaction resulting from mixing manganese(IV) nitrate and potassium carbonate.

It has been awhile since I took Chemistry back in high school but I managed to get the first part of molecular:

Molecular: Mn(NO3)4 (aq) + K2CO3 (aq) --> ?

Net ionic: ?

Total ionic: ?

You have to show your attempts at solving the question to receive help. This is a forum policy.

Hint: check solubility rules to see what kind of reaction to expect.

I've taken your hint into account and ended up with these:

Molecular: Mn(NO3)4 (aq) + K2CO3 (aq) --> Mn(CO3)2 (s) + KNO3 (aq)

Total ionic: Mn4+ (aq) + 4NO3- (aq) + 2K+ (aq) + CO32- (aq) --> K+ (aq) + NO3- (aq) + Mn(CO3)2 (s)

Net ionic: Mn4+ (aq) + CO32- (aq) --> Mn(CO3)2 (s)

Look at the number of atoms on either side of the reaction.

You need to balance the equation.

For example, 2K+ on one side but only one K+ on the other.
