Qualitative Analysis - questions about my results.
« on: October 05, 2013, 04:06:06 PM »
Hi everyone.
So this is a question, I cannot find answer to and it is about one of the reaction I carried out during my last practical classes.

So this is reaction of Br- with KMnO4 . My solution changed colour to bright yellow. I was wondering whether it is a colour of one of the compounds of Mn or is it the colour of Br2 in the solution. I've searched for different Mn compounds but I am not able to find anything which is bright yellow.
Also, the Br- solution turned yellow after adding conc. H2SO4 so I assume it must be Br2 but I'm not sure.

Could you advise me on this?

Cheers!

You are correct. Bromine is the culprit. Figure the rest out yourself.
