Dispute need 3rd opinion quick n easy.
« on: October 15, 2013, 03:07:22 AM »
Hi, I need a third opinion on these compounds if it is the same compound or diastereomer. Diastereomer as in diferent 3d arrangement of atoms but no enantiomer, but at the same time wouldnt that fall under a conformer? picture is attatched with the two compounds. Thanks!

*edit* both compounds are butyl, just in case it looked like the picture cut off part of the chain on the right, they are the same length.

What do you think and why? Remember you must show you have attempted the question, it is a Forum Rule.

No, check the definitions. Conformers are related by low energy rotation about σ-bonds, diastereoisomers can  only be interconverted by breaking bonds (or, less commonly, by the kind of high energy rotations that cause atropisomerism).

Ahh your definitions have more detail than mine sadly, My original answer was diastereomer, but with your definitions im almost sure it is a conformer so the same compound. Thanks

You should look up the IUPAC definitions and use those.

They look like the same compound to me.
