Need help Identifying this compound
« on: November 02, 2013, 11:08:58 AM »
This is a 2 element compound. I've identified the anion to be Cl and I know the cation is group 5 or 6. I am leaning towards 6 since I couldn't get any precipitates in the group separation. I have posted a picture below. It is clumpy and relatively sticky, unlike regular powder. It reminds me of fish eggs.

Any help is appreciated

You're going to have to identify what elements are contained in "group 5 or 6" in your particular Qualitative Analysis scheme, they're not all the same.  You will also have to mention what tests you've done so far, and what tests you can perform.  Your bit of trivia about the sample's consistency is useful, but you'll have to save it for later, when you want a conforming test.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

The only possibilities in my case are Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+ Na+, K+ NH4+ and Mg2+

I don't have access to the lab any longer and I've tried google imaging all the combinations but nothing that looks the same comes up

First thing that comes to mind - all these are quite unlikely to give a yellow compound.
