Black p-benzoquinone
« on: November 08, 2013, 12:41:13 PM »
I need p-benzoquinone for my reaction but the only one i found is very dark, almost black. It should be yellow crystals. On the label i can read +98%. I did a H-NMR and it was clean. Why is it black? Can I use it?

Wacker Oxidation?  Yes, you can, but use extreme caution when running that, as you are never quite sure how active that P-benzo is……….Double bond changes to the carbonyl……then the addition of….well……you have fun.

It sublimes nicely if you want to purify it.
