The Common Ion Effect
« on: March 06, 2006, 10:16:24 PM »
What's the effect of adding 0.5 moles of HCl to 1.0 L of 2.333E-5 M NaOH?

I am unsure of how to get the answer; could someone help me with the steps?

I started off like this:

---------NaOH + HCl <-> H2O + NaCl or OH- + H3O+ <-> 2H2O
Initial HCl-------------NaOH-------------NaCl
delta 0.5 mol--------2.333E-5 mol------0
Equi. -0.5 mol_____-0.5 mol-----------+0.5 mol

But then a negative number of moles results and now I am at a loss of what to do to get the final answer.

Please help.

Thanks.
