How do I determine molecular mass witht he given info?

(1/1)

bryon_barker:
When 19.23 g of a molecular material is added to 717 mL of water, the boiling point becomes 102.436OC. What is the molecular mass of the material?

If you could tell how to set it up to solve it too, that would be great, because looking throught my chemistry notes, I can't find any examples on how to set this up.

lemonoman:
This is about Boiling Point Elevation, which is represented by

change in T = (i)(Kb)(m)

i is the Van't Hoff factor, which depends on the number of ions produced when a substance dissociates.

I have to say I didn't know this could be predicted until you mentioned it in your post, and I did a bit of research.  I liked this page (click here) best, and it's the one I actually learned from :)

Good luck!
