Two-Component System Problems
« on: December 05, 2013, 06:46:54 PM »
Loss of sleep and gain of tests has fried my brain so I really need any help anyone can offer!
1)A solution of 0.1 molal AgNO3 in water is saturated with AgCl and AgBr.
   a)How many components are in the system?
   b)How many phase? Name them
   c)How many degrees of freedom? If P is fixed, can T vary?

2)Assume that benzene and toluene form ideal solutions. Pure benzene has a normal boiling point of 353.15 K; at that temperature, toluene has a vapor pressure of 350 torr.
   a) Calculate the partial and total pressures of a solution at 353.15 K with
   XBenzene = 0.20.
   b)What composition of solution would boil at 353.15 K under a reduced pressure of 500 torr?

3) At 363.15 K a solution of n-propanol (X2=0.259, P2*= 577,5 torr and water (P1*=527.76 torr) has a vapor pressure of 820.3 torr; the vapor phase is 39.7% n-propanol (Y2=0.397).
   a)Calculate the vapor pressure, activities, and activity coefficients of each component
   b)What should the vapor pressure of this solution be according to Raoult's Law?

Anything will help. I have parts of each problem complete but I would like to see how you all would go about these problems. Thanks!

1. RXN unknown
   a) 3? components (AgNO3, AgCl, and AgBr)
   b) 2 phases (liquid and solid??)
   c) F=3-2+2= 3 degrees??, and yes T can vary is P and two other components are known??

2) Xbenzene = 0.20 so Xtoluene= 0.80?
Ptoluene= (0.80)*(350 torr) = 280 torr
Pbenzene= (0.20)*(???)
-how do you find vapor pressure of benzene?
Ptotal = Ptoluene+Pbenzene

b)?

That is all I have so far I will post #3 shortly
