can I get any tips on how this reaction might proceed, the only thing I know is that the product is a chloride salt.

Thionyl chloride in dioxane is used for Beckmann rearrangement of oximes. In your case two products are possible. See cyclohexanone oxime Beckmann rearrangement.

thanks AWK for the help, do you think any of the products of Beckmann rearrangement would match the following data ?

product:C5H8NSCl ------> seems to be wrong!!!
HNMR of the product:
                               2 (2H,qui,j=7)
                               2.5(2H,t,j=7)
                               2.9(2H,t,j=7)
                               4.6(2H,s)
