Topic: why is (NH4)2HPO4 used in the gravimetric analysis of magnesium?  (Read 1560 times)

I was wondering why magnesium is reacted with (NH4)2HPO4 in order to form Mg2P2O7. Is there another anion that magnesium could have been coupled with such as carbonate to make a precipitate?

It is a matter of solubility product (the lower, the better), the form of the precipitate (it has to be easy to filter), and properties of the substance - it needs to be easy to dry out to constant mass without decomposition. Apparently Mg2P2O7 has these properties.
