Will activated charcoal adsorb 4-methylcyclohexane methanol?
« on: January 14, 2014, 06:37:20 PM »
Will a filter made from activated charcoal adsorb 4-methylcyclohexane methanol? Thousands of gallons of 4-methylcyclohexane were recently dumped into my city's water supply. I will not drink the water but I am thinking about buying a shower filter. Do you think it will help even a little bit?

From what I recall from Organic chemistry, the molecule would be a 6-membered ring with a methane group and a methanol group. A quick search tells me that charcoal will not adsorb alcohols... Does this include larger molecules that have an alcohol side group such as 4-methylcyclohexane methanol?

If I had to guess, I'd guess that running your water through a Brita filter would take care of the problem.  The concentrations of the chemical are very low to begin with.  I'm not sure how you're going to test the water after you've filtered it, other than just seeing if the smell is gone.
