Test Tube Mixer
« on: January 25, 2014, 09:08:21 PM »
So I was asked to find a test tube mixer.
I have seen the shakers, vortex and magnetic stirrers.
But, we would like something link the paint mixer you put on the end of a drill.
Maybe even have a high shear version.

But my powers of GOOGLE elude me.
Am I searching for something that does not exist?

I think want you may want is a homogenizer, or something like that.  This would be an ultrasonic wand, or a Teflon plug nearly the diameter of the test tube -- an especially strong one.  Both are used to pulverize living tissue breaking it up into micro vesicles.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

@Arkcon

This suggestion is a good start and I am doing the GOOGLE.
Any other ideas are welcome, but this sends in a better search direction.

So I did the GOOGLE on test tube homogenizer and found lots more hits.
I actually called a company and got a quote for less than $800.
I went to Amazon and found some for less than $400.
I guess my thoughts of about $100 were a tad off mark.

We are looking to cobble something together using a Dremel or some sort of small erector set thing. It may be enough for what we are doing. If not I guess I will break the piggy bank.

We have an old piece of equipment in our lab made by Thermolyne, called a Maxi MixTM.  It creates a vortex, and mixes the contents of test tubes that way.  If you do a Google image search on "thermolyne maxi mix plus," some pictures of various models will come up.  The prices for used ones look to be in the $50-100 range.
