Changing harmful CO2 to Carbon and Oxygen
« on: January 30, 2014, 11:19:05 AM »
Hello,
I was reading about Global Warming and thought how could we change

Co2 →C + O2

is it even possible ?

and I don't want plants

and also could we recover or create artificial ozone layer ?

Ignoring the issue of how you would do it, just consider the thermodynamics of the reactants and products. To effect this conversion requires ~393.5 kJ/mol of energy (per mole of CO2) at room temperature. This neglects the efficiency of the process, but assuming 100% efficiency of whatever process you're using, that's a lot of energy. 1 mole of CO2 at STP is about 22.4 liters. How many liters would you need to make a climatological difference? Say you wanted to deplete 10% of the CO2 in the atmosphere. You can do a back of the envelope calculation to see how much energy you would need. And then you have to figure out where you're going to get that energy... and don't forget that most of the energy available currently is from combustion, which produces CO2. :)

Then you've got to figure out how to do it, a whole separate problem.

For CO2? You can't do electrolysis since is covalent product.
It would be difficult to do thermolysis or photolysis.
The simplest would be reduction. Burn Mg in an atmosphere of CO2 and you get MgO and C.

Perhaps something like photosynthesis can be done in a test tube.

I'm sure there are a bunch of other possibilities such as
2 KI + CO2 + H2O -> K2CO3 + I2 (I forgot the exact equation)

The ozone layer is actually not pure ozone. There is a little bot of ozone molecules. That's bc ozone gets decomposed to oxygen and sometimes reforms, sometimes not.
O3 and O2 are in equilibrium. Dumping ozone into the ozone layer is not going to help.
However, making ozone is easy.

Actually there are ways of doing that: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/036031999500007Z

From what I remember technically it is removing carbon dioxide from the carbonates solution by electrolytically acidifying it.

What's that saying?  A good sales man can sell anything?  I'm wondering why they haven't tried selling all of our CO2...

I've read that people are trying to displace the CO2 to underground storage sites by using an amine to seperate the CO2 from the other gases.  Not sure if something like this will be safe.
