Which reactions could happen?
« on: February 06, 2014, 08:15:14 AM »
Dear all,

I mixed 2 solutions: FeCl2 (light green) and NaHSO3. It appears orange yellow color immediately. Then I had left the solution for 1 day, the red yellow color returned light green (like FeCl2).
I was wondering whether Fe(II) combine with HSO3 to become complexes? Thanks in advance.
Sorry for my bad English

Well, ferrous salts are generally green in solution and ferric salts tend to be yellow-brown. Bisulfite is a reducing agent that will slowly react with dissolved oxygen to form sulfate.

Does this give you any clues to what may be happening?

Thanks Corribus,

I also thought about that possibility. But I didnt see any precitipation, just the yellow-brown solution. Additionally, the solution turned to the initial color (light green) after 1 day.
