Estimating bulk costs. How do you do it?
« on: March 03, 2014, 10:05:39 AM »
Hi everyone. I'm writing up a method for a patent, and I was wondering if any of you had any experience estimating the bulk (that is, anywhere from 10-100 kg) costs of a research chemical. I could put in for a quote from one of those overseas suppliers, but I feel a little dishonest doing that since I am not a customer, just trying to get a number for my own purposes. I am sure that the price per mass is much reduced from the specialty-chemical cost, but I have no idea how much.

I've never wrote up a patent before but have had to work out the approx price of a compound I've made before for my PI.  Is that what you are doing?
When in doubt, avoid the Stille coupling.
