Reaction between NA2C03 and C3H3N3O3
« on: March 11, 2014, 08:56:24 AM »
What is produced when sodium carbonate and cyanuric acid powder are heated? Are there any harmful products? I'd like to try this as an experiment at home, as long as no toxic gasses etc are released!

Cyanuric Acid decomposes into a poisonous vapor around 300 C.
(Anhydrous) Sodium carbonate melts at 851 C.

Why wouldn't this make poisonous vapor?

After some reading, i see that sodium cyanate is produced by this reaction. However I don't know what else is produced, my sodium carbonate is 99% and cyanuric acid is 98.9% pure.

Can anyone explain what temperatures are required for this reaction, what equipment etc. I could buy NaOCN directly but i'm interested in the chemistry (haven't done any chemistry since highschool).
