elemental iodine reaction with elemental lead
« on: April 17, 2014, 10:05:58 PM »

Hi

I have been trying to know what happens with iodine and lead react (in their elemental form and not as lead nitrate/acetate with potassium iodide)

Any clue anyone? Do they react in air? Do they need water? Do they need heat?
Used google as well as searched these forums, but did not find the answer.

These are solids, so they will react rather slowly (although iodine is quite volatile, which will help). Other than that, their reaction is quite obvious. Many simple compounds can be prepared by a direct reaction of elements.

Dear Borek - thank you.
Can you point me to a link where I can see the reaction?
Unable to find one. I can only see lead nitrate plus potassium nitrate, but not lead + iodine in elemental form.

OK.  Do you know the possible valences for each element?  Can you write the possible formulas?  Do those formulas have a name?  And can you Google for that formula name?  Wikipedia will probably say, when you get the correct formula name, that the compound can be made just as you describe.
