What kind of tool I need to open this chemical container?
« on: April 28, 2014, 11:29:55 AM »
Hello,

I bought a propylene glycol 55 gallons drum from DOW. I'm having a hard time transferring the chemicals to small containers.

The drum looks something like this:

I want to put a faucet on the 3/4 inch plug. Here's the photo of the plug:

But there's something blocking the plug. How can I remove this? What kind of tools do I need?

I cut that plug from the container so I can show it to someone that will know how to install the faucet.

Is this the part you are trying to remove?

If it is then you need one of these

If you are quite handy at welding you can make one yourself. The longer the better as sometimes the plugs are screwed in pretty tight and you don't want to be making sparks!

Use the end on the right hand side pointing out of the top. It's just a small screw bung, usually used as an air hole when pouring out the contents of the drum.

Either will do.

A set of pliers won't provide enough torque.

Just search for a drum wrench as eazye1234 suggests or drum spanner if you are in the UK.

Personally I'd not use either of those types as they try to do too much and compromise their ease of use because of that.  I use either of these.
