Removing hydrogen peroxide from Copper Sulfamate solution
« on: June 07, 2014, 03:48:46 AM »
Hello,

I prepared Copper Sulphamate by reacting Copper Sulphamic acid and hydrogen peroxide. I want to use the solution for copper plating experiment, but first I need to remove the peroxide. I could boil it down, but I don't want to do that.

Can I add Manganese Dioxide to destroy the peroxide and filter the solution?

I think The sulphamate would be also destroyed by Manganesedioxide.

I actually tested the solution as is, the copper plating was already corroded when taken out of the bath. I already tried to add the MnO2, the color of the solution is stable light blue-green 10hours in the reaction. When MnO2 was added tiny bubbles formed. I will filter and test electroplating with the solution again tomorrow.

If MnO2 did indeed destroyed any sulphamate, what would be the products?

Sulphamate will go to sulfate and Nitrogen. Manganese dioxide to manganese 2+.

I can't find anything on Google, so someone will have to correct me if I'm far wrong.  But if you used a dilute hydrogen peroxide solution, it won't survive being dried.  If copper sulphamate will then you can evaporate until crystals form, then filter them out and dry,  Of course, if it were that easy, you could just buy the solid copper sulfamate.  Maybe you can't for that reason, or maybe you made it yourself for another reason.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

You actually can buy solid Copper sulfamate, but only in bulk quantities. My reason for doing this are electroplating experiments - I work on a project, where I want a part nickled. I just got deeper into this.

So, after addition of MnO2, my not work properly. Unfortunately, I disposed it already and prepared a fresh batch. I have a metal hook on which the plating sticks to the surface as supposed, but Sulfuramic acid eats on most surfaces I tried.

I will report back if I succeed to electroplate after H2O2 removal by MnO2 treathment. But for now the status is: Peroxide destroyed my electrolyte.

My question is, why you add the Peroxide before?

I wanted to get copper to dissolve in sulfamic acid. I had a copper wire in the acid for 2 days with no reaction altogether.

Correct, you can't dissolve copper just in a non oxidizing acid.

I did another plating solution, this time it got contaminated by aluminium, as I incorrectly identified the piece to plate as steel. After addition of peroxide the solution turned deep-orange and after more mls it turned light brown. The copper dissolves into nice blue-green layer at the bottom of the flask.

Aluminium sulfate is colorless as far as I know. What could cause the color change to brown?

Yellow color in Peroxide, sounds for me titanium.
