« on: August 01, 2014, 06:54:08 AM »
how do I named a compound with a branched alkyl group and other alkyl group attach to main chain. For example, 2-methylbuthane and methane  attach to the main carbon chain which one come first? and as I said in the topic how do i named alkyl group which has its own branch. It's not overly clear what you mean to me, can you draw a (sub)structure?

You need to choose the longest straight chain available in your structure (the parent chain), in your case you can have 7 carbons maximum, so the base for the name will be heptane. Now you need to identify all the substituents on the parent chain - we have three methyls on the 2, 3, 4 positions and one isopropyl (2-propyl) on the 3 position. So the full name will be: 2,3,4-trimethyl-3-(2-propyl)heptane (the substituents go in alphabetical order). Is this clear now?
