What solid chemichal causes steam, or a similar harmless gas? Please understand I am no chemist just quite like some help.

Please do not try this
Steam is usually produced by heating water above its boiling point of 100C. There are various exothermic reactions that could achieve this although it depends what your needs are.

What kind of exothermic reactions? And by steam is by no means harmless do you mean just when its hot as hell?

exothermic reactions like combustion to produce the fire needed for heating water, and basically any other method u'll use to start a fire.
and yes, hot as hell
