Esterification of Valproic Acid with Decanoic Acid
« on: September 25, 2014, 07:56:02 PM »
Not a chemist but a curious physician. Need advice -

Is it possible to combine valproic acid (http://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/summary/summary.cgi?cid=3121&loc=ec_rcs) and decanoic acid (http://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/summary/summary.cgi?cid=2969&loc=ec_rcs) via esterification of the carboxyl group on valproic acid?

Thanks.

I may not be understanding your question fully, but the only functional group on either molecule is a carboxylic acid.  In principle one could join them, but the linkage would be a carboxylic acid anhydride (or just anhydride for short).

A curious chemist would like to know what this will achieve?
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

Could you combine the two... yes... though not through esterification.
Second disco's curiosity in to why you want to know this before going further.  I know valproic acid has some interesting physiological activity, what are you hoping to do with the decanoic acid attached to it?
When in doubt, avoid the Stille coupling.
