Significant Figures
« on: October 20, 2014, 11:53:42 PM »
How many significant figures can a 1000 mL beaker measure to?
I would say at most 4 since if its at 1000 mL, there are 4 significant digits, however if it is below 1000 mL. it would only be 3 since they are usually 50 mL increments and the uncertain digit is the first one ex. 0 in 110 mL.

So is it 3 or 4?

Significant figures are a lousy way of dealing with the experimental errors, in this case they are completely useless.

2 at best. 3 would mean you can measure 777 mL, which is clearly impossible.

Despite having graduations beakers are not considered precision glass, they can be used to measure volumes only approximately.
