Pure Bromine
« on: November 18, 2014, 10:52:41 PM »
Hey, I've been trying to buy some liquid bromine for a while. I keep trying to find it, but I only find bromine for pool use. I want it in a clear container just to observe; any idea where to get it?

Sorry, you're not going to find this for sale at your local Home Depot. It's dangerous to handle without proper equipment and won't be commercially available to the general public. Even transporting the stuff is hazardous.

Looks like it is probably real, just a tiny amount so it may be ok to ship. I don't know what the DOT guidelines are for shipping bromine in this quantity. May be exempted. I guess the seller would have to deal with that, though.

@Corribus

As an aside
There are entities that sell small samples / ampoule to element collectors.

Whether or not a certain entity is running a legitimate operation is always a question.

Yeah for some reason I thought he was after a larger quantity.

Looking at the prices charged for shipping combined with the fact that the UN no. 1744 of bromine has zero for the limited and exempted quantities I doubt this seller is declaring the shipment correctly.

Ha, just make the stuff. It's pretty simple chemistry.

Cute.  However, liquid bromine attacks just about any known seal material so can eventually escape any container except a flame sealed ampule.  And stinks to high heaven in trace amounts.   So if you're a die-hard element collector, you may just have to buy one of the sealed ampules.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromine#Physical
