Homework help. solvents
« on: December 24, 2014, 02:57:12 PM »
A. In which of the cases the organic layer will be the higher layer, and in which it will be the lower layer?
 ???
1. On an extraction of aquatic solution with Chloroform (CHCl3) and on an extraction of aquatic solution with benzene (C6H6).
2. On an extraction of aquatic solution with Dichloromethane (CH2Cl2).
3. On an extraction of aquatic solution with Ethyl acetate (CH3COOCH2CH3)

B. One of the compounds of a tomato is likopen.
1. which solvents can be suitable for an extraction in aquatic solution
2. Is Acetone is suitable for the extraction?

 :-[ I know it's a lot of questions, but there're more... :

C.
1. Explain the 'salting out' effect'
2. Why an addition of Ethanol causing the Emulsion to break?
3. Why do we add Na2CO3 to the solution?
4. Why do we add Na2SO4 to the organic layer?

Let's start with the first question. The density of chloroform is about 1.5 g/cc. If mixed with water, do you think it will be in the top or bottom layer? Benzene?

Hey, thanks for paying attention.
Density of water is 1 gr/cm3. so chloroform will be in the bottom probably  ::)
Benzene is less dense then water, so it will be on top  ::)
That's all what the question is about? density?

What about B?
I think a suitable solvent for extraction of lycopene is ethyl-acetate. im not sure though.
about acetone as a solvent - i really dont know  ???

Why ethyl acetate?
What is the structure of Lycopene? Is it polar or non polar? You should choose a solvent with similar polarity to the compount you want to extract.

And about acetone... What would happen if you mix acetone with water?
