Hybridization given me sleepless nights
« on: December 23, 2014, 04:30:30 PM »
Hey I have a questions that has been bothering me for a while.

Why is XeO4 a sp3? I understand that you can count the bounds as the first bond being s then sp then sp^2 and then sp^3 = four sigma bonds.

But I really want to understand why this type of method doesn't work as they are using on this website http://www.adichemistry.com/general/chemicalbond/vbt/hybridization-illustrations.html

And all the youtube tutorials are using this technique also but somehow it doesn't work for this compounds XeO4 and XeOF2

I would really appreciate for some help as this has give me some sleepless nights.

In your link check the example of the IF7, the same you can do for XeO4. Xe will be 5 sp3 5 d4 Oxygen 2 sp2.
