Hi guys,

Please help me to figure out the product in this reaction: HIO3 + HCl (conc., excess)  :rarrow:

I suppose that can produce H[ICl4]·2H2O

What do you think?

Here is my logic:

Assume the reaction produces iodine and chlorine:
2HIO3+10HCl(conc) :rarrow: I2+5Cl2+6H2O

I know, that Iodine and chlorine can react at 25 °C:
I2+3Cl2 :rarrow: 2ICl3

I also know that ICl3 can react with conc. HCl and water:
4H2O + ICl3  :rarrow: HICl4·4H2O

Summing up the reactions:
HIO3 + 6HCl(conc., excess) + H2:rarrow: HICl4·4H2O + 2Cl2

Can it be true? If someone has access to SciFinder, could you please look up this reaction?

Or maybe it just stops on chlorine and iodine, i don't know. In the flowchart they mention excess HCl.. that's why I want to suggest HICl4·4H2O as the product
