Another task which I'm struggling
« on: January 31, 2015, 06:27:17 PM »
The task says:
By burning magnesium on the air, except magnesium oxide, magnesium nitride is formed. The most is produced by heating magnesium hydroxide or magnesium carbonate.

a) Write all the equations for reactions!
b) In redox reactions determine oxidising agent and reductant agent and also oxidation numbers!

Stuck!
I think that's what the task says.

I am afraid what you posted is quite cryptic - I bet English is not your first language.

But first things first - can you write formulas for all compounds listed? Magnesium oxide, magnesium nitride, magnesium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate?

Can you then write skeletal (unbalanced) equations for all reactions listed? For example - when magnesium is burnt in the air, one of the products is magnesium oxide, can you write skeletal equation for this reaction?

Magnesium hydroxide - Mg(OH)2
Magnesium oxide - MgO
Magnesium carbonate - MgCO3
Magnesium nitride - Mg3N2

2Mg(s) + O2(g)  :rarrow: 2MgO(s)

But I really didn't understand the task. I am not even sure if it's all information that there is provided in the task but this is only thing that I've got.

What I've figured out from the task is that I should somehow get Mg3N2 from Mg(OH)2 or from MgCO3 , but I don't see how.

As I said earlier, what you posted is cryptic and I guess it is already a poor translation of a problem that you didn't understand in your native language, am I right?

IMHO it is not about producing magnesium nitride, it is about listing all reactions mentioned in the problem.

You already have one of them (is it redox? what is getting oxidized, reduced, can you find oxidation numbers?). There are three other reactions mentioned, can you write them?
