Hi, can anyone give me an idea how to work these two questions out - thanks
1. Iron making was one of the largest industries in this area.
In a gross simplification of the complex processes in the blast furnace iron oxide (Fe2O3) is reduced to metallic iron when it reacts with carbon monxoide (CO):-
Fe2O3 + 3CO --> 2Fe + 3CO2
You need to calculate how much iron is produced from 41.93 grams of iron oxide.
2. In some areas where the underlying rock is limestone you can find strange dips in the ground. This is where limestone burning took place long ago to make lime for spreading on agricultural land to reduce acidity and, thus, increase the fertility of the soil. When heated, limestone (calcium carbonate (CaCO3)) decomposes into calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Calcium oxide, also known as quicklime can then be mixed with water to produce much heat and lime (calcium hydroxide) for spreading on the soil.
CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2
You need to calculate how much calcium carbonate is needed to make 12.726 grams of calcium oxide.
