Entropy check
« on: April 14, 2006, 06:32:02 PM »
Question: As solid borax dissolves in water, do you expect entropy (DeltaSsys) to increase or decrease (ans:decrease). Will the sign of DeltaSsys be positive or negative (ans: positive) Explain your answer:

My answer: They hydrated boron ions are less ordered than the solid so entropy increases.

Is this answer sufficient?

Thanks,

Sheryl

Sounds good
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
