Sulfur Questionaire
« on: April 15, 2006, 11:29:44 AM »
I am new to this forum, its a neat little board you have here. Anyways I am pretty bad in chemistry and wanted to double check my work before sending it in. If someone can go over it and tell me if they are correct or most of them for that matter would be greatly appericated. All have to do with sulfar.

1.
The main products of the incomplete combustion of hydrogen sulfide and oxygen are
-hydrogen and sulfur dioxide

2.
The action of concentrated sulfuric acid on carbohydrates is known as
-esterification

3.
The allotropic form of sulfur produced by heating sulfur to its boiling point and pouring it in cold water is
-amorphous

4.
A water solution of hydrogen sulfide is called
-sulfuric acid

5.
SUperphosphate is made by treating calcium phosphate with
-calcium hydroxide

6.
Burning sulfur in oxygen results chiefly in the product
-SO2

7.
The gas that is formed when HCl is added to a mixture of iron and sulfur is
-sulfur dioxide

8.
Copper reacts with hot concentrated H2SO4 to yield
-SO3

9.
The tarnish formed on table silver is
-Ag

10.
When sulfur and copper are heated together
-copper sulfate is formed

11.
A water solution of sulfur dioxide is called
-hydrosulfuric acid

12.
Sulfites are salts of
-H2S

13.
A water solution of hydrogen sulfide is a
-strong acid

14.
The element used in vulcanizing rubber is
-potassium

15.
Rhombic sulfur is most soluble in
-carbon disulfide

16.
The formula of sodium sulfite is
-Na2S

17.
The anhydride of sulfuric acid is
-H2S

#2,4,8,10,11,12,13,14,16,17

Maybe there are some others that are wrong, but I'm in a rush...

Thanks Albert and hongkong. Its werid you both say #2 is wrong, because it is right here on my text word for word

Yes! Think about what conc. Sulfuric acid could do with a carboHYDRATE

Hint: conc. Sulfuric acid is hygroscopic....it attracts water

Other hint: elementar carbon is a product of this reaction

Correct! :)

If you want to you can set up a reaction equation

C6H12O6 + H2SO4 ----> C0 + H2SO4*H2O

reworked.

4. hydrosulfuric acid (hydro since it is a water solution)

8. h2

10. copper sulfite is formed

11. sulfuric acid

12. H2SO2

13. weak acid

14. sulfur

16. Na2SO2

4.)No..

8.)Still wrong...Hint: Sulfur(Vi) is reduced to Sulfur(iV) while elementar copper is oxidized to Cu2+

10.)Forget about oxygen being involved itn this reaction...the product is a salt with only Copper and Sulfur, where sulfur carries a double negative charge.

11.)Still wrong..

12.)Sulfites are salts of H2SO3 (try to name the compound by yourself...)

13.)Yeah! It's a pretty weak acid

14.)Correct! The vulcanized sulfur makes the rubber elastic...(disulfide bonds between the hydrocarbon chains)

16.)Ahhhhhhh.....Na2SO2 would be a sulfoxylate...the sulfur in sulfites is +4!

17.)Correct! SO3 + H2O ----> H2SO4

My 3ooth post! :)

You probably should check out this site...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfuric_acid

Particularly...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfuric_acid#Chemical_properties

For #4 read this definition, maybe it will help a little...
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=aqueous

Read some wikipedia articles for things closely related to Sulfur like sulfuric acid, sulfur dioxide, et cetera. Then come back and try to fix your errors. Wikipedia sometimes can be unreliable though so keep that in mind.
