Bonding in sulphur dioxide
« on: July 14, 2015, 11:34:22 PM »
Why is there a pπ-dπ overlap in SO2?
Why not a pπ-pπ overlap?
How do you find out if the d orbital is involved in π-bonds?
I know that pπ-dπ is effective when the size of d orbital is similar to size of p orbital and secondly, the size of d orbital decreases from Phosphorous to Chlorine.

But it does not explain why d orbital participates in π bond.
