Normality/ Molarity conversion
« on: April 19, 2006, 03:57:41 PM »
Hello.

I needed to make a 6N HCl stock solution. So i was going to dissolve 109.3813 g HCl in 500mL of water. HOWEVER, my teacher just emailed me and said that the HCl only comes in aqueous HCl and is 11.6M. She said 11.6M = 11.6N. My question is... How can i convert that to 6N? (I want 500mL of stock solution)

What if i did....
N1V1 = N2V2
(11.6M)(V1)=(6M)(500mL)
V1 = 258.6 = 259 mL of 11.6M HCl

Is that ok?
Thanks again!

Yes.

You may try CASC (see my signature) to check such things.

you calculated right. if you want 6N HCl you should dissolve 109.3831 g HCl in 500 ml of water.( 6M =6N)
or if you have 11.6 M HCl

N1V1 = N2V2
(11.6M)(V1)=(6M)(500mL)

V1 = 258.6 = 259 mL of 11.6M HCl than add water and complete it to 500 mL
