Bottom of bunsen burner catches on fire, HELP please!
« on: September 18, 2015, 12:42:19 AM »
Hi everyone!

I have a bunsen burner "with pilot flame and stopcock" made by Hecht Assistent (see pictures on https://www.flickr.com/photos/134515254@N05/?, pic #1 to see exactly which one). It is 100% properly attached by a hose to the gas container, but I have a rather annoying problem:

Sometimes when the burner has been in use for a few minutes - then the bottom of it catches on fire! (I made a video where I use a lighter at the bottom to simulate how this happens.., the pictures #2-#7 seen on the link given above are from the video and show my "simulation". Everything is the same way when this happens regularly when in use, except for that its bottom catches on fire without the use of a lighter).

The other pics show my own burner.

I am really no newbie in the use of bunsen burners, but I have never had this exact type before. I can by no means figure out why this happens, and it is equally likely to happen no matter how much gas is allowed to flow through it or how much oxygen is set to control the completeness of the burning.

Can anyone please help me figure out what is wrong here, ALL thoughts and suggestions are very much appreciated!!

And just to mention it - it is a propane gas that I use.

Thanks SO much in advance,
SciFan

Hard to tell from these pictures. Have you tried to put it under water to see if there are no gas leaks?

Yea - sorry. I noticed that after I posted it...  haven't been on for a while. (actually I couldn't log on for a bit - I took a break then found I couldn't log on - I thought my account had been deleted so went elsewhere for AGES..  lol... my P login seems to work now...  so I'm back.).
