Titration - to find formula of hydrated salt
« on: May 01, 2006, 11:03:34 AM »
i need to plan 2 experimental methods to determine the formula of a hydrated sodium carbonate. My first method involves heating crystals of hydrated sodium carbonate but I'm stuck on how to find out the formula using titration.

i would really appreciate the help.

You could titrate your sample assuming that it is Na2CO3sicc..
After having performed the titration you can easily calculate the mass of pure Na2CO3

w(Na2CO3) = m(Sodium carbonate)/m(mixture that you assumed it was Na2CO3sicc.) * 100

This could be a method to find the percentage of water in your sample of sodium carbonate.
