Determination of composition of gas phase.
« on: December 23, 2015, 02:11:46 PM »
Hello,
I have to write a lab report and there are also some problems to answer.
I cannot find an answer to this one:

Describe a simple method how the composition of the gas phase can be determined.
Hint: Think about how the purity of liquids is usually determined in organic chemistry.

I think the hint refers to the refractive index but I don't know how I can use it to determine the composition.

I know some analytical methods that could be use but they seem to me not simple enough.

PS. It is Physical Chemistry Lab but I think I posted it in a right section, since it is somehow analytical problem.

What did the gas phase contain? Was is a simple two component mixture, or something more complicated?

It is a general question, it is not really connected to experiment.

I've no clue what should I answer. I can only came up with methods that are too sophisticated.

If there is nothing known about the gases present, I don't see how to determine the composition "simply" - whatever it means.

I don't recognize what you mean.  Sire, we could use refractive index, in some situations.  But determining the purity of a liquid, is that the only way, or best way?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
