Name the molecule
« on: January 12, 2016, 07:50:07 PM »
I'm in year 12 chemistry at the moment and in a lesson we were playing around with like those molecule building kits and we made this molecule. Just wondering if anyone could figure out the correct IUPAC name for it?

In the picture:
Black - Carbon
Red - oxygen
White - Hydrogen
Green - bromine
Yellow - sulphur

First of all - it is impossible, carbon is not pentavalent.

Not with that attitude it's not.

Joking aside, pentavalent carbon is one way to check if your molecule is correct or not. Here's a handy little resource about pentavalent or "Texas" carbon.
Or you could, you know, Google it.

Jacobgum, you said carbon is not pentavalent, . really ? i can recall an organic structure where carbon had a pentavalent strutture,... if i can recall but I'm not sure but i think it was with phosphorus
lord.khalifa,

Phosphorus may be pentavalent; perhaps that is what you are remembering.

As far as I remember, phosphorus can be pentavalent but carbon is not. If you found carbon to be pentavalent then please prove it by elaborating in details.

Thanks
