Does anybody have recommendations for good places to host websites?
I am using my ISP for mine, now, but I am outgrowing it.

Paid hosting or free hosting? Any specieal features you need? Perl, PHP, Mysql or do you need just basic html? Also, what space/bandwidth requirements.

Paid, but less than I am paying now.  I now pay c. $25/mo extra for bandwidth past what I get for free.

I don't need any special features now, but I might want to try adding them.

The Yahoo! Starter package looks very good at first glance.  For $12/mo, I'd get 5 GB space (about 100 times what I use now), and 200 GB bandwidth, about 25 times what I am using now.  Do you know anything about them?

Never buy anything from Yahoo, there prices are always inflated. Try www.godaddy.com or www.namesecure.com
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

NameSecure actually seems more expensive than Yahoo.  Their cheapest package is less, $8 vs $12, but the one comparable to the cheapest Yahoo pack is $16.  (Yahoo does have a $25 setup fee which confuses the comparison.)

GoDaddy is cheaper though, for sure.  I didn't see GoDaddy mention anything about PHP or Perl support, however.  (Edit:  Looking at the fine print, the GoDaddy 'Deluxe' plan at $7 does have a slew of this stuff.)  I haven't used those kinds of things yet, but it would probably be a good learning project to mess with them.

Do you know anything about the reliability of the various choices?  Yahoo is the one name I have really heard of before, my knowledge of GoDaddy is only of their silly Super Bowl ads.

A little searching on GoDaddy turned up lots of comments about how bad they suck for web hosting.
So, GoDaddy and NameSecure are now both eliminated from contention.

I did see a number of comments that DreamHost was really nice.  At $10/month, (HUGE storage and bandwidth), they might be in first place now.

I have never done business with them, but I've seen them advertise in magazines before. It's $3 for what seams like a good deal. I would look into it further personally.

Thanks.  I finally decided to try HostGator.

This was a lot harder decision than I expected!  It sounds like many providers offer too much for too cheap, and get overwhelmed and can't quite deliver.  Plus, very many 'reviews', or 'top 10 lists' or such are completely corrupt.  Yahoo didn't sound good under further review.

What exactly do you need? Maybe we can just host some of it for you?

as with all things, "you get what you pay for".

A couple of tips:

1. dont pay too far in advance until you are satisfied with hosts' performance
2. If you register a domain name, make sure of the companys' policy on moving your domain to another host if you should ever need to.

I think I have my new host all arranged now, so I won't need to borrow any of your bandwidth.   :)

Now, I am waiting to squeeze all my files through my dial-up connection to the new location.
Then, I'll get to wait for DNS name propogation...

Looking at web page statistics sure is fun.   :)

I had no statistics at all with my ISP/host I have been using.  Now, with my new host, almost all I have so far, is me testing my stuff.  In addition, though, I am now getting ChemicalForums traffic from my new avatar.  (I put the Texas flag back.)  So I get to watch that, while I check my own stuff to debug it.
