Remove CaCl2 from ethanol solution
« on: March 09, 2016, 09:56:14 AM »
I'd like to get 100% alcohol solution. I have 200 ml of ethanol-96% solution. In what quantities must I add CaCl2 to remove water from the solution? And how to remove CaCl2+H2O from the solution?

You can use stoichiometry, if you'd like to try.  What is the reaction that is supposed to happen?  Can you convert that into numbers you can use?

CaCl2 is soluble in ethanol. Moreover, Anhydrous CaCl2 forms solvate with ethanol (CaCl2ยท3C2H5OH). Lowitz around 1800 obtained small amount of absolute ethanol by this dehydrating agent. Using this method you do not dehydrate ethanol completely and you need repetead use a good distillation column.
In lab CaO, CaC2 or azeotropic destillation with benzene are used.

Also, kciray:, I'd like to remind you of the Forum Rules{click}  Whether its for a high school class,or just your knowledge, or something you're puttering about in a basement lab, we want you to learn to help yourself solve most problems.

Also, please realize, whether you "need" or "want" absolute ethanol, or need to learn how for the fun of it or some application, that the production of absolute ethanol, even in tiny amounts, is tantamount to bootlegging, which is illegal, in just about any jurisdiction that has laws.
