gas chromatography-carbowax column
« on: January 31, 2008, 10:27:42 PM »
Hi, is a carbowax column good for the separation of polar compounds, similar in structure, differing only in functional groups
Thanks
Rosie

Very late reply but others may find it useful.

Carbowax is better suited to very polar substances, such as polyhydroxylated substances or acids when compared to PDMS.

Glycerol and propane diol give very poor peak shape on non-polar columns. They are also useful for separating aroma chemicals, terpenes are eluted before terpenoids, assisting in identification.

Carbowax columns have a much lower maximum temperature than
most columns.  They are a lot touchier to use than the pdms columns.

They are the required column for analysis such as n-nitrosamines.
