Ammonium polysulfide...
« on: June 06, 2005, 01:14:16 PM »
Hey guys I've got a question:

Today I just ran out of ammonium polysulfide (NH42Sx)! Does somebody of you know how I can make it? Mabye I've got and idea: Dissolving elementar sulfur in ammonium sulfide so that the sulfur chains form.... ???

Thanks for any *delete me* ;)

You can dissolve elementary sulfur in water solution of (NH4)2S for preparation of ammonium polisulfide , but some traces of ammonium sulfite  and thiosulfate would be formed as follows:
S2-+ H2O= HS- + OH-
OH- + S = S2- + SO32- +H2O
SO32- + S= (S2O3)2-
Rate of the mentioned above reactions of disproportionation of sulfur in alkali are depended on concentration of OH- and seems to be negligble in water solutions of ammonium sulfide.

Yes, warming solution of (NH4)2S with S8 gives ammonium polysulfide with x mainly 4 or 5.
